A Grave Discovery
Nancy knelt down and studied the tire tracks that ran across the Drews’ front lawn. She nodded. “It’s definitely the Rollinses,” she said as she stood up. “Same type of truck—or at least the same type of tires.”
“What a couple of creeps,” George Fayne said angrily. She and Bess were first cousins, but they were totally different types. George was tall, slim, and athletic, with short brown hair and brown eyes. Unlike her cousin, George wasn’t at all nervous around spooky cemeteries or in thieves’ hideouts. But despite their differences, the cousins were good friends.
George had shown up at Bess’s house soon after Nancy had received Hannah’s call about the robbery. Nancy had dressed quickly, and Bess had driven them to the Drews’. On the way to the house, Nancy had filled George in on the two cases.
The police had been to the house earlier. Hannah had given them a full report; then Nancy had told them her theory about the tire tracks. They had written everything down and left. Nancy had double-checked the tire tracks after the police were gone.
The girls went back into Nancy’s house, where the thieves had made off with everything of value. They’d stolen the family’s computer, stereo system, TV, and VCR. Every piece of Nancy’s jewelry was gone—all she had left were the emerald stud earrings she was wearing.
The thieves had really torn the place up. They’d thrown things around, ripped down curtains, and broken two kitchen chairs. Nancy’s room had been hit worst of all. It looked as though a tornado had whirled through it.
Sadly Nancy fingered the earrings. They had belonged to her mother. The thieves had also taken the necklace and bracelet that matched the earrings. Unless Nancy could recover the stolen things, those treasured mementos were gone for good.
Nancy shook her head and sighed. “These robbers aren’t just greedy. They’re vicious.”
Bess put her arm around her friend. “It’s awful, Nancy.”
“What did the police say?” George wanted to know.
“They told me that after the burglary was over, a man called the police to say he’d seen the robbers from the house across the street.”
“What!” exclaimed George. “He actually saw them?”
Nancy nodded. “He said he saw a light-colored van drive up to our house. A young man and woman got out and headed around the back of the house. There was enough light from the street lamp for the witness to see that the woman had short brown hair and was wearing a denim jumpsuit. That fits the description of Francesca Rollins. And I saw her wearing a jumpsuit on the news the other night.”
“But why didn’t the eyewitness call the police right away?” Bess asked.
“He’s from out of town,” answered Nancy. “He’s house-sitting for the couple across the street. He probably just assumed that the man and woman lived in our house.”
“That proves the Rollinses pulled off this robbery, too,” George said. “The man identified the crooks.”
“Right,” said Nancy. “The tire tracks point to them, too. Then there’s the way the locks were jimmied.
